Over the weekend I was at a nice birthday celebration for a couple of friends of mine (gorgox and lilchef) and I was directed to notice [livejournal.com profile] debxena's new glasses.

Which I hadn't noticed for reasons I'll go into and which I then vehemently disliked for reasons I willl similarly explain below.

So first and simply, I tend to notice hair style changes more than I notice changes in glasses (or even lack there-of).

You see I used to be a glasses wearer, I discovered I needed them when I first went to university (so I came to them late), and it always bugged me that I needed them.
And because I needed them, I wanted them to be as functional as possible and as unobtrusive unobtrusive as possible.
So whilst I started with thickish frames and medium-large rectangles, I moved on to thin metal frames and large round lenses.
Why I hear you ask?
Because the thin metal frames were the most unobtrusive on my vision I could get and the larger the lenses the less I had to turn my head to use my peripheral vision and also the further out of my central vision area the frames would be.
Eventually I learnt (or adjusted) and stopped noticing the frames as much.

Boy I was glad when I finally got contact lenses. No more Frames but still other hassels.
So I eventually got laser correction and haven't looked back (except for the occasional funky moire patterns in pure or laser light).

Which is why I notice hair (and clothes) more than glasses, because hair's (and most clothes) colour or style does not interfere with it's functionality, whereas glasses are something that is worn for a function. Also I feel that the choice of hair or clothes brings out a personality whereas glasses by their very nature, distort or conceal. And thus I look past them.

And as to the vehemently disliking DX's glasses. Well there is a small element of I hate the style(Small rectangular lenses sitting lowish so that the tops of the lenses are right in the vision line when someone is coyly looking up at you) , even if it does look good on her (Which of course it does, which says volumes about DX but doesn't save the style). But my biggest complaint is that the style forces the dreaded frames across the person's vision area and thus obiviously breaks up the line of their eyes.
Which is simply unforgivable.

Glasses (like operating systems, but I won't go there now) should be functionally unobtrusive!
